The route is long, so the honest position is that this suits some pets and some owners better than others. The paperwork for travelling out to Spain
This is the single most important part of planning, and it works differently going out than coming back.
Since Brexit, an EU pet passport issued in Great Britain is not valid for travel into the EU. Instead your dog, cat or ferret needs an Animal Health Certificate issued by an Official Veterinarian authorised by APHA. The certificate must be issued no more than ten days before your pet enters the EU, and the day of issue counts as day one. Your pet also needs to be microchipped before or at the same time as its rabies vaccination, and must be at least twelve weeks old before that vaccination is given.
Once issued, the AHC covers onward travel within the EU for four months and one return journey to Great Britain. It is single use for the outbound leg, so a separate certificate is needed for every trip that starts in the UK.
We have found that the ten day window is where bookings come unstuck. Owners book the vet appointment early to be organised, then discover the certificate has expired before the departure date. Because a UK to Spain run takes two to three days on the road, the AHC needs to cover the point of entry into France, not the arrival date in Spain. That distinction is easy to miss and it is the first thing we check when a booking comes in.
There is one more practical point that catches people out. You cannot carry meat or dairy based products into the EU, and that includes most meat based dog food. Plan the feeding around plant based options or buy on arrival.
How the route actually runs

The typical shape of the journey is Calais down through Rouen or Reims, then a long day through central France towards Bordeaux or Toulouse, then across the border at Irun or La Jonquera depending on whether the destination is on the Atlantic or Mediterranean side. Northern Spain destinations such as Bilbao or San Sebastián are reachable more quickly than Malaga or Almería, which sit close to the far end of the peninsula.
Overnight stops are planned rather than improvised. Driver hours matter, and so does the animal. In our experience a dog that has been in a vehicle for eight hours needs a proper break, a walk and a settled night rather than being pushed through to save half a day.
In our experience, a two driver rotation on the Spanish route works better than a single driver pushing longer days because the animal gets more frequent proper stops rather than fewer long ones, and the overnight period stays predictable. Single driver runs are perfectly workable on shorter routes like Kent to Paris or Belgium, where the whole thing is done inside a day. On a run to the southern Spanish coast the maths changes, and stretching a solo driver across it produces a worse journey for the pet.
Heat is the factor people underestimate
Anyone planning a summer move to Spain needs to think about this properly.
Southern France and inland Spain get seriously hot from June through September. Vehicle air conditioning handles the driving hours, but the risk sits in the stops, the loading, and any period the vehicle is stationary. For flat faced breeds, older animals and thick coated dogs, that risk is real rather than theoretical.
The way we manage it is to shift the driving pattern rather than rely on the aircon alone. Early starts, longer midday pauses in shade, and the heaviest driving in the cooler parts of the day. It makes the journey slightly longer on paper and considerably safer in practice. If you are moving in July or August with a bulldog or a Persian cat, say so when you enquire, because it changes how we plan the schedule.
Why owners choose road over flying to Spain
Flying is faster, and for some pets it is fine. The reason owners come to us instead usually comes down to three things.
The first is separation. On a flight, the animal is handed over at check-in and not seen again until arrival, often in a cargo hold. On a road route the pet stays in the cabin with a person it has already met, and you can be in the vehicle too if you choose.
The second is airline restrictions. Carriers apply breed restrictions and temperature embargoes, and brachycephalic breeds are frequently refused outright. Long routes also carry costs that a short hop does not, including driver accommodation, tolls and fuel across France and Spain. A quote that looks unusually low for a run of this length is worth questioning, because the distance does not shrink to fit the price.
Coming back the other way
Plenty of our Spanish work is inbound rather than outbound, and the requirements reverse.
Returning to Great Britain, your pet needs a microchip, either an EU pet passport or a UK health certificate, and a valid rabies vaccination. Dogs also need a tapeworm treatment administered by a vet between one and five days before entering the UK. That window is tight and it is not negotiable at the border.
